CHICK COREA: THE MUSICIAN
3 CDs and a Blu-ray in a deluxe hardcover book
$99 $69
THIS EDITION IS OUT OF PRINT
In November 2011, Chick turned seventy. He booked the Blue Note for the entire month.
November 1 to 27. Ten different bands. More than forty performances, two shows a night — fifty years after he first turned up in Greenwich Village.
Return to Forever, unplugged, with Stanley Clarke and Lenny White. The classic Elektric Band with John Patitucci, Dave Weckl, Eric Marienthal and Frank Gambale. The Five Peace Band with John McLaughlin. Herbie Hancock. Bobby McFerrin. Gary Burton with the Harlem String Quartet. Marcus Roberts. Gary Peacock and Paul Motian. A band called From Miles, with Eddie Gomez, Jack DeJohnette, Wallace Roney and Gary Bartz. And Flamenco Heart, with Buika singing.
Somebody filmed all of it.
The word he would not take
Ten bands in twenty-seven days is ten times standing in front of a group and deciding what happens next. John McLaughlin, who was in one of them, in the film:
“‘Leader’ is a tricky word. No really good leader ever wants to be a leader.”
— John McLaughlin
Chick, on being the one out front:
“The way I’ve learned to be the best at that is to only do it when others don’t. I just pick up the loose ends. That’s what I consider that I do.”
— Chick Corea
Forty-odd shows out front, and he describes the work as picking up loose ends. Then he called the set The Musician. Not modesty — the accurate word for what he did every night that month.
“That’s what the story’s about. It’s about musicians, being musicians. When people ask me, ‘What did you learn from Miles?’, that’s the salient thing that I took from my experience. Miles just let his musicians be themselves. He let them be musicians.”
— Chick Corea

Where the flamenco thread starts
Flamenco Heart was one of the ten bands that month. Two of those players — Carles Benavent and Jorge Pardo — are also on Rhumba Flamenco, Chick’s record with Touchstone.
“I could call it ‘My Flamenco Heart.’”
— Chick Corea, on Rhumba Flamenco
