"The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center commissioned me to compose a piece of chamber music for the New Work Festival held in Miami on June 13 1982.

"There was a set of subsequent performances in New York the following January9th, 1983, ending with a PBS "Live From Lincoln Center" broadcast. Finally in September/October 1984 I reformed the group for a concert tour of the United States at the end of which this recording was made. 

"Writing Septet was my first venture as a composer into creating a through-written piece of this length and complexity. I must say I had great fun doing it. it began with no idea of form but only the idea that I would improvise the form as I wrote. I just kept writing until I ran out of time and then composed an ending."
